My baby is graduating from high school this year. Graduation in next week. He is graduating from a charter school. He will graduate with his high school diploma and about 60 college credits. Most of the kids will be graduating with a diploma and an associates degree. Steven started his junior year so I am super impressed that he got even this close to his associates degree. Not bad for someone who started so late in the program.
For the awards ceremony part of graduation, students are to ask a person who was vital in their success to robe them. Steven has lots of family and 3 brothers that may or may not have helped him in his success. He chose someone outside the family. Enter the Starbucks barista who has been “with the family” for many years. She knew my older son by name for many years. She would ask about me when the boys went in to the store. She got to know Steven when he started high school. All of the boys were in band. They all had zero hour which meant that they had to be to school at 6:30am every morning. Sometimes earlier.
Truth-be-told Starbucks was an amazing help to me. If I got a text from the Starbucks app that said I had a new balance on my card, I knew the kids made it to the store across the street from school and they were on time and safe. I took them to school many days, but on the days that they were on their own I could count on Starbucks to let me know where my kids were. It was a good feeling to know they got to school safely.
Our barista has always been very kind and friendly. She makes us feel welcome and gets to know us.
So this happened last week.
Steven asked her to be his “date” for graduation and to robe him during the ceremony. While this might feel like my efforts to help him graduate were being downplayed I truly feel like she was the best choice of people to celebrate with him. I am happy that he is graduating and happy that he has had such an amazing high school experience, both at school and just across the street.
BTW, what do you give a Starbucks barista in a thank you card? A Starbucks gift card just doesn’t seem right……….
I will post graduation pictures and a follow up as soon as it all happens!
